Was 'Spawn' the Worst Movie of the 1990s?

Twenty-four years ago, one of the first Black superhero movies came out. For SyFy, I looked back at Spawn and talked about why it was ahead of its time ... but also absolutely horrendous. Hope you enjoy.

So, I Finally Saw 'The Village'

For whatever reason, I never got around to watching The Village, the movie that began the downward spiral of one M. Night Shyamalan. Well, with Old out, it seemed like a good time to finally catch up with it, especially since the film came out almost exactly 17 years ago. I had a lot to say over at SyFy.

In Praise of Danny Boyle's 'Sunshine'

It's one of his most divisive films. It was a box-office bomb. But I like Danny Boyle's Sunshine. It came out 14 years ago, and I sang its praises over at SyFy.

'Revenge of the Sith' and the End of George Lucas' Reign

When I was doing research for my piece on the anniversary of Revenge of the Sith's release, I found this quote from an anonymous studio executive back when the prequels were first announced: "Somebody else doing Star Wars means nothing; George Lucas doing it means everything." And then I knew I had my in to talk about Lucas' legacy. My piece is up at SyFy.

'The Mummy' Has Held Up Really Well

More than 20 years after it came out, 1999's The Mummy is still silly, goofy, scary fun. How did that happen? I wrote about it over at SyFy.

Looking Back at 'Kick-Ass'

If Kick-Ass came out now, would it be a big deal? Lord knows it was back when it premiered in 2010. For SyFy, I wrote about how the movie's envelope-pushing approach isn't as shocking as it once was. Hope you enjoy.

Looking Back at Guillermo del Toro's Best Monster Movie, 'Hellboy'

It's been 17 years since Hellboy came out. The superhero-movie landscape has changed radically since then. What's also changed: Guillermo del Toro's Hollywood stock. (He's won a few Oscars since this movie.) I looked back at its legacy over at SyFy.

The World That 'The Matrix' Made

For "This Week in Genre History," I went back to 1999, when a movie called The Matrix changed, well, everything. I still remember seeing this film during its opening weekend. For SyFy, I look back at what the Wachowskis wrought.

Going Back in Time With 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure'

It has been 32 years since the first film came out. Its abiding lesson: "Be excellent to each other." My appreciation is up at SyFy.

'Coraline' and the Launch of Laika

Laika isn't held in the same esteem as Pixar, but they've done innovative stop-motion animation for more than a decade. And it all started with Coraline, which came out 12 years ago this month. I wrote about its legacy over at SyFy.

On December 25, 1999, a sci-fi spoof that took aim at Star Trek came to theaters. Twenty-one years later, we're still talking about Galaxy Quest. My piece is up at SyFy.

Just How Bad Is 'Interview With the Vampire'?

Anne Rice didn't want Tom Cruise to play the lead. Brad Pitt wanted to quit during the shoot. For SyFy, I look back at this thoroughly dopey vampire flick.

Going Back to 'The Ring'

It's been 18 years since the American remake of the J-horror classic hit theaters. (We were all so much younger back then.) Has it held up? Here are my thoughts.
