I am fascinated by movie posters. They are this special mixture of art and marketing that have to sell a film's essence in a single image. So, how do they do it? For the Los Angeles Times, I talked to the creative teams behind Bugonia, No Other Choice and Sinners to learn the behind-the-scenes secrets. It was very fun.

'Black Panther' Review

Black Panther started generating plenty of buzz more than two weeks before its release. The review embargo lifted this morning; my thoughts on the latest Marvel movie are over at Screen International.

'Creed' Review

The results aren't all in yet, but I seem to be one of the few initial critics who didn't go for Creed, the latest in the Rocky Balboa series. There's a twist to this movie, though: This time, it's not Rocky who's the main character. That would be Adonis (Michael B. Jordan), the secret son of Apollo Creed, who now wants a shot in the ring. I found Creed to be an intriguing but mostly formulaic attempt to breathe new life into this franchise. My review is up at Screen International.

'Fruitvale Station' Review

So, I go to Sundance this year, see a bunch of movies, and still end up missing the U.S. Dramatic Competition winner. That would be Fruitvale Station, which opens on Friday in select cities. I think it can be a bit wobbly dramatically on occasion, but it's still rather affecting. My review is up at Paste.
