The Best Movies of the 21st Century (So Far)

Rolling Stone
asked a bunch of its contributors to work on a massive list of the best films of the 21st century. Remarkably, we're already 25 years into this new century, which means a lot of good movies. As always, I didn't have any say in the final rankings, but I did some of the write-ups, including Y Tu Mama Tambien, Inside Llewyn Davis, Dogville, Burning, Uncut Gems, I Am Not Your Negro, The Souvenir and others. Dive in.

Nicole Kidman is trapped in suburbia in Holland, a psychological thriller that doubles as a prickly character study. My review is live over at Screen International.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: So Many Movies, So Little Time

It's become an annual tradition I really enjoy: On the podcast right before we record our "Best of the Year" episode, we do a lightning round in which we review a bunch of end-of-the-year films in quick succession. This year, that meant rapid reactions to A Complete Unknown, Nosferatu, Nickel Boys, Babygirl, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and The Order. Check it all out down below.

What's the Best Movie From 1999?

Rolling Stone created a list of the 99 best movies from 1999. Then, the editors asked regular contributors to write capsules for the films. I got to write about Eyes Wide Shut, Three Kings, The Wind Will Carry Us and others. Check out the whole list here.

'Spellbound' Review

In Spellbound, a princess (Rachel Zegler) has to help her parents, the king (Javier Bardem) and queen (Nicole Kidman), after a curse transforms them into monsters. Will she be successful? And how familiar is this animated fairy tale? I answer some of those questions over at Screen International.

2024 Gotham Awards Nominees

It has been an annual tradition I am very proud to be a part of. The folks at the Gotham Film & Media Institute invited me to once again join the committee that selects the nominees for the Gothams' acting categories. Alongside Monica Castillo, Robert Daniels, Tomris Laffly and Brian Tallerico, I helped pick this year's best Lead, Supporting and Breakthrough performances. You can see our choices here, along with the nominees in other categories.

Venice 2024: 'Babygirl' Review

Venice has its first critically-acclaimed sensation: Babygirl, the new film from the writer-director of Bodies Bodies Bodies. I have to admit: I was pretty mixed on it. My review is here.

'The Northman' Is a Lot of Viking Movie

Robert Eggers loves immersing us in long-ago worlds. He does the same with his third feature, The Northman, which is about a Viking seeking vengeance. My piece is up at MEL.

'Extra Hot Great': Talking About 'Being the Ricardos,' 'Insecure' and 'How To With John Wilson'

Well, this was a treat: I got to be on Extra Hot Great with David T. Cole, Tara Ariano and Sarah D. Bunting to review Aaron Sorkin's new movie. And then I talked about some TV I've been watching, and we all discussed an episode of The Simpsons, "Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie," which a listener think is an all-timer. Did we agree? Listen below.

Thinking of 'Eyes Wide Shut' as a Christmas Movie

I still remember seeing Eyes Wide Shut opening night. Funny enough, my future wife was at the same screening. This article is not about that, though: It's about how Kubrick's final film has been embraced as a holiday film. Read on.

Some Thoughts on 'Bombshell'

Is calling a movie "timely" actually a compliment?

Just how important is it to play a real person if you're gunning for an Oscar?

And what do "Peace in L.A" and "Let's Roll" have in common?

I answer those questions, and more, in my piece on Bombshell for MEL.
