'Eternity' Review
A romantic triangle in the afterlife? That's the premise of Eternity, an A24 romantic comedy that I wish I liked better. You can read my review here.

My Interview With Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, the Stars of 'His Three Daughters'
The three actresses who star in His Three Daughters all have busy schedules, so it was tricky to figure out a time for them all to get on a Zoom to speak with me about their terrific film. Finally, we landed on a date: November 6th. Yup, the day after the presidential election. It was evening on that Wednesday when we chatted, and the mood was understandably somber. We talked about Trump and death and laughing at grief. I found the conversation cathartic; I hope they did as well. My piece is up at the Los Angeles Times.

Toronto 2024: 'The Assessment' Review
The Assessment is set in a near future where society has gone to hell. How bad is it? Couples have to be "assessed" to determine if they are allowed to have children. Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel play one such couple, with Alicia Vikander as their assessor. Things get weird from there, as I describe in my Screen International review.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: Doctor Strange, 'Happening' and My Cannes 2022 Preview
It's that time of year again: I'm off to Cannes soon. That means I spent part of this week's episode spotlighting some films I'm excited to see at the festival. Also, we reviewed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Happening. Hear the whole thing down below.

'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Review
You know how most Marvel movies don't feel like they were directed by anyone in particular? Well, that's not an issue with the new Doctor Strange film: It definitely seems like the work of one Sam Raimi. That's a good thing, as I explain in my Screen International review.

'Silent House,' 'Open Water' and Horror Movies Based Around Gimmicks
Over at Deadspin, I wrote about Silent House, which stars Elizabeth Olsen. (It's funny to think that Silent House debuted at the same Sundance that included Martha Marcy May Marlene; the girl specialized in playing terrified women that year at the festival.) My article is less a review than it is a look at the movie's directors, Chris Kentis and Laura Lau. Last time we heard from them, they were responsible for Open Water. You maybe hated that film; I thought it was pretty great. Well, years later they're back with another movie built around a gimmick: Silent House is meant to look like one continuous shot. Watching the movie, I got to thinking about this whole notions of "gimmicky" horror films. Are they necessarily bad because they have a high-concept hook? Here are my thoughts on that.

'martha marcy may marlene' review
One of the big sensations at this year's Sundance, Martha Marcy May Marlene is pretty much as good as advertised. Even if Elizabeth Olsen never does anything as impressive again, well, she did this. My review is up at Yahoo.
