Truth be told, I've never loved the films of director Matteo Garrone (Gomarrah, Reality) as much as my colleagues have. But I'm rather taken by Tale of Tales, which came into Cannes with plenty of buzz. I was suspicious -- a movie that combines three different 17th-century Italian fairytales? -- but I think it's his strongest recent work.
