I was quite taken by The Force, which premiered at Sundance and offered an inside glimpse at the workings of the Oakland Police Department, which had been beset by scandal for more than a decade. So, I was happy to speak with its director, Peter Nicks, about Black Lives Matter, the challenges of police reform, and what happens when you try to make a nuanced film about a politically charged subject.
