Truth be told, I've never loved the films of director Matteo Garrone (
Gomarrah,
Reality) as much as my colleagues have. But I'm rather taken by
Tale of Tales, which came into Cannes with plenty of buzz. I was suspicious -- a movie that combines three different 17th-century Italian fairytales? -- but I think it's his strongest recent work. (And trust me: You probably don't want to know what Salma Hayek is eating in that photo.) I dive into this uneven, unpredictable, fairly magical movie for
Paste.
