The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: Let's Talk About the Oscars

On this week's podcast, we reviewed The Lost City and Everything Everywhere All at Once ... but, let's be honest, that really doesn't matter. Last night's Academy Award ceremony sure was something, and we chatted about it ... about 30 minutes after the whole thing went down. Listen below.

SXSW 2022: 'The Lost City' Review

The Lost City features two very likeable stars who give their all to a script that I think lets them down. For Screen International, here's my review.

'The Unforgivable' Review

What if Sandra Bullock was in a movie that's out and you had no idea? Such is the case with The Unforgivable, based on the British miniseries, which finds her playing a released convict trying to adjust to the outside world. The film isn't good, as I explain over at Screen International.

A Salute to Bad Labor Day Movies

Normally, summer movie season ends with a whimper. Labor Day weekend is when studios dump their bad films. For MEL, I paid tribute to some memorable stinkers.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: World War II Misery, Scorsese's Religious Epic and 'Demolition Man'

On this week's episode, we differ on The Painted Bird. Then, we have two Reboots: Martin Scorsese's tortured Silence and that nutty slab of 1990s sci-fi, Demolition Man. Hear the whole thing down below.

Five Replacements for 'A Quiet Place Part II'

So, for Vulture, we're going to start doing a regular series called "The Replacements." The idea: Blockbuster season was supposed to begin this weekend, and big movies were set to arrive on a regular basis from here on out. Well, things have changed, so we'll be suggesting alternative flicks for that week's postponed event movie. First up: Our picks for films that scratch that itch if you were wanting to see A Quiet Place Part II. Hope you enjoy.

Is Netflix Telling the Truth About 'Bird Box' Being a Phenomenon?

I talk about that over at MEL, and I also have thoughts about Susanne Bier's career and why I wouldn't make it too long in a post-apocalyptic thriller.

AFI Fest 2018: 'Bird Box' Review

Bird Box is going to have to endure endless comparisons to A Quiet Place, which won't help Susanne Bier's post-apocalyptic drama about a mother (Sandra Bullock) who lives in a world where people have to keep their eyes closed in order to stay alive. I reviewed the film for Screen International.

A Salute to Astronaut Movies

With First Man premiering at Venice this week, Will and I devoted our latest Debate Club to astronaut movies. Funny how many of these are about missions that go wrong. Check 'em out at SyFy.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: 'Ocean's 8,' 'Hereditary,' 'Won't You Be My Neighbor?' and 'Before Sunset'

On this week's episode, we talk about three new movies: the ones with the women pulling a heist, the one with the woman whose house may be haunted, and the one about the kindly television host. Then, in our Reboot segment, we look back at Before Sunset. Up next week: Before Midnight. You can hear the whole show below.

'Press Play With Madeleine Brand': Heists, Horror and 'Artemis Hotel'

I always have a lovely time hanging out with Madeleine. Today, April Wolfe and I were on KCRW to review Ocean's 8, Hereditary and Artemis Hotel. You can hear the whole thing here.

'Ocean's 8' Review

I'm praying that Ocean's 8 doesn't face the same online nonsense that befell the 2016 all-female reboot of Ghostbusters. As for the film, it's good, but not great. My review is up at Paste.

Yeah, You Can Skip 'Our Brand Is Crisis'

I find Our Brand Is Crisis to be the sort of cynical political satire that does almost nothing for me. I have a feeling that general audiences are going to feel the same way: The movie seems to have almost no buzz around it. I examine the corpse over at Deadspin.

Toronto 2015: 'Our Brand Is Crisis' Review

Based on the documentary of the same name, the heavily fictionalized Our Brand Is Crisis stars Sandra Bullock as a disgraced political strategist called in to help with a presidential election in Bolivia. Neither satirical nor probing enough, this political comedy-drama just kinda sits there in the middle of the road. My review is up at Screen International.

What Was 2013's Best Movie Scene?

Whoops, the picture gave it away, huh? Well, you might as well read on to see what I thought of Gravity's stunning opening.

Toronto 2013: 'Gravity' Review

The Toronto Film Festival offers so many kinds of movies that you could meet 10 different festivalgoers and their choices might not match up all that much. But just about everyone I knew was excited to see Gravity. I caught the film on my last day at the festival. Count me among the people who are incredibly, incredibly impressed with the movie but still have a few reservations. My review is up at Paste.

'The Heat' Review

Can women be funny? Yes, of course -- and what a silly question. Is The Heat funny? Sorta. I reviewed the movie for Screen International.

Let's Face It: The Razzies Are Dumb

I understand that it's fun to goof on bad movies -- hey, I do it with Showgirls and Dog Lover's Symphony -- but to spend as much time as the Razzies spend doing it? Frankly, I just think it's lame. You can read my reasoning here.

(And if you don't know, yes, that's Sandra Bullock accepting her Worst Actress prize a few years ago for All About Steve.)
