The Best Movies of the 21st Century (So Far)

Rolling Stone
asked a bunch of its contributors to work on a massive list of the best films of the 21st century. Remarkably, we're already 25 years into this new century, which means a lot of good movies. As always, I didn't have any say in the final rankings, but I did some of the write-ups, including Y Tu Mama TambienInside Llewyn DavisDogvilleBurningUncut GemsI Am Not Your NegroThe Souvenir and others. The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: 'Wicked' vs. 'Gladiator II'

On this week's podcast, we look at the two big movies that opened over last weekend. (Turns out, we disagree on both of them.) And then we spend a little time with The Piano Lesson. Check out the show down below.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: Brie Larson, Alexander Payne and Albert Brooks

On this week's podcast, the clear winner is The Holdovers, but we also spend a little time discussing The Marvels and Albert Brooks: Defending My Life. There's also the occasional reference to 1980s sitcoms. Hope you enjoy.

'The Marvels' Review

"Worst Marvel movie ever!" I wouldn't go that far, but I do think the franchise is showing serious signs of fatigue. My review of The Marvels is here.

How the 'Iron Man' Post-Credits Scene Changed Hollywood

It was 2008, and Marvel was putting out Iron Man, the first film in what the company hoped would be a string of superhero flicks. And to get audiences prepared for the future, Marvel ended the film with a little scene after the credits, where Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark encounters a strange figure in his home. Blockbusters were never the same, for better and for worse. My latest is over at MEL.

Super Bowl Weekend Isn't for the Fellas at the Multiplex

Traditionally, romantic comedies and horror movies open on the Friday before the Super Bowl. The thinking is that men tend to be too focused on the game to care about films. But that's been changing lately. I wrote about this shift for MEL.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: Pixar, Bad Sequels, Sparks and 'Fatherhood'

We dig into four new movies on this week's podcast. We both discuss Luca and Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. Will asks me about The Sparks Brothers, and I ask him about Kevin Hart's latest, Fatherhood. You can hear the whole thing down below.

'The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard' Review

The wife is kinda fun, but the hitman and the bodyguard are (still) the pits. My review of this needless sequel is live at Screen International.

'Spiral: From The Book Of Saw' Review

Chris Rock came up with an idea for a Saw movie. And so we now have Spiral. The idea isn't bad but Rock, surprisingly, is. You can read my review here.

When Stars Reunite ... but the Movie Isn't a Sequel

With Runaway Bride on Netflix, I was thinking about what an anomaly the film is: It reunites the stars of Pretty Woman but has nothing to do with Pretty Woman. For MEL, I wrote about the phenomenon of the non-sequel sequel.

Cinema's Greatest Sharks

Summer's almost over, folks. But before you go to the beach one last time, remember: There are sharks out there. For SyFy, we paid tribute to some pretty terrific great whites.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: Aliens, Zombies, Bob Dylan and 'Shaft'

One really good movie, one really terrible movie, one that I think is slightly underrated, and one that's not good but isn't quite as horrible as others have said. Welcome to the summer doldrums, ladies and gentlemen. You can hear this week's podcast down below.

Some Thoughts on 'Shaft'

Why is Shaft such a complicated role model?

Why is Samuel L. Jackson so good at swearing?

And what Regina Hall movie should you see instead?

I answer the tough questions about the new Shaft over at MEL.

'Captain Marvel' Review

At long last, Marvel has its first female-driven superhero movie. Unfortunately, Captain Marvel is just OK. Not bad, just ... OK. I reviewed this good-enough film for Screen International.

Some Thoughts on 'Glass'

Glass really annoyed me, for personal reasons, which I get into over at MEL.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: 'Glass,' 'Fyre,' Sundance and 'What We Do in the Shadows'

Lots to cover in this week's podcast. We both rip on Glass and praise Fyre. (No, not the Hulu documentary. The other one.) I give a little Sundance preview, and then we look back at What We Do in the Shadows. Hear the whole episode down below.

The Best Airplane Movies

This Friday, American Made opens. It's about an airline pilot who becomes a smuggler. So, for Popular Mechanics, I put together a list of the finest movies about planes. Yes, Snakes on a Plane made the list. No, Con Air did not. You can read the whole thing here.

Toronto 2017: 'Unicorn Store' Review

Brie Larson makes her directorial debut with Unicorn Store, which risks cutesiness at every turn. She plays a failed art student who comes to believe that she's going to receive a unicorn from a mysterious salesman (Samuel L. Jackson). Is she right? Is she crazy? Unicorn Store is a goofy, odd little beast, but I went for it. My review is up at Screen International.

The Grierson & Leitch Podcast: 'Marjorie Prime,' 'V for Vendetta' and Soderbergh

I haven't seen V for Vendetta in 11 years, so I was curious to revisit it. Did my feelings change about the movie? Not so much. Elsewhere in this week's episode of the Grierson & Leitch podcast, we discuss Logan Lucky and The Hitman's Bodyguard. And I go to bat for Marjorie Prime. Hear the whole thing below.

What's Samuel L. Jackson's Greatest Performance?

Will and I did another ranking for Vulture. This time, we counted down Samuel L. Jackson's best roles. One thing you will notice very quickly: This man has done many movies. Many, many movies. Good lord, it was exhausting. But we're really happy with how this turned out. Dig in!
