My Interview With Michaela Watkins

I had such a fun time talking to Michaela Watkins, an actress and improv performer whose bio says, “I’m that gal from that thing that you watched.” She's everywhere, and she'll be in several things this spring, including Paint and You Hurt My Feelings. For Cracked, we had a long conversation about Julia Louis-Dreyfus, doing impersonations, her tough time at Saturday Night Live, getting older, missing her friend Lynn Shelton, and how she failed in her mission to be a slut. Hope you enjoy.

'Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark' Review

For Cracked, I wrote about Marc Maron's new standup special, his first in three years. A lot has happened since then, most notably the death of his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, and he digs into it in From Bleak to Dark. You can read my thoughts here.

My Tribute to 'Humpday'

I was really sad to hear about the passing of Lynn Shelton. Her Humpday is one of the best movies of the last 15 years, a near-perfect bromance because it's not in any way like so many bromances. I salute the film and the filmmaker over at MEL.

Sundance 2014: 'Laggies' Review

A big Lynn Shelton fan, I've wanted her to break through in a major way after Humpday and Your Sister's Sister. I was less disappointed by her follow-up film, Touchy Feely, than others were, but her latest, Laggies, is the one where I start to lose hope. More polished and tightly scripted than her earlier, better films, it stars Keira Knightley as a woman who refuses to grow up -- and decides to befriend a teen girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) who thinks she's super-cool. It's a cute, slight idea, but I wanted more. Here's my review.

Sundance 2013 Review: 'Touchy Feely'

Touchy Feely, the latest from writer-director Lynn Shelton, isn't as good as Humpday or Your Sister's Sister. But it still moved me, even if it does strain a little too hard for a feel-good vibe. Still, when it comes to Shelton, I forgive a lot. My review is up at Screen International.

'your sister's sister' review

Humpday is one of my favorite recent American indies, so I was excited to see what writer-director Lynn Shelton would do next. That turns out to be Your Sister's Sister, which isn't quite as accomplished but still rather fetching. I saw the film in Toronto and review it for The Projector.
