Sierra Pettengill has made a documentary about a fascinating little bit of American history: In order to better prepare for riots in the 1960s, the U.S. government created model towns where they could stage fake protests. (Also, the government filmed these recreated riots for posterity.) Using archival footage, she looks at this surreal bit of playacting. My review of
Riotsville, U.S.A. is over at
Screen International.
