I liked The Guard, the debut feature from writer-director John Michael McDonagh. But his second film,
Calvary, is on a different level. It's about a priest (Brendan Gleeson) forced to look back on his life after an anonymous parishioner threatens to kill him in a week. This is a despairing, eloquent movie about the search for some sort of lasting value in this world. My review is up at
Screen International.
